Model UN and European Democracy

The LFAEuroMUN is an opportunity to use the framework of the Model United Nations to discuss issues linked to the theme of Empowering Democracy, and to raise awareness about the challenges to Democracy, especially in the context of the upcoming European Parliamentary elections in 2024.

Conference with a Twist

The conference, organised in partnership with the European Parliament Former Members Association and the Maison Jean Monnet (managed by the European Parliament), is centered around a three-day MUN conference, with a twist. We would like to create a pre-UN conference scenario in which the UN delegations of the EU member states come together as a caucus to define a common resolution to put forth in subsequent full UN committee debates. In keeping with MUN principles, the participants shall not represent their home countries.

Committee Topics

  • Tackling democracy in a digitalised world – Economic and Social Council
  • Balancing democracy and security – Political Committee
  • The question of corruption and the role of business in promoting human rights – Human Rights Council
  • Strengthening democratic governance and democratic institutions – Special Committee

Expert Guest Speakers

Although most of the committee time would be devoted to discussing clauses proposed by the member state delegations, an expert guest speaker will intervene in each committee and present a crisis situation for delegates to debate. This interaction with an expert who has had some real policy-making experience should be a particularly enriching experience for delegates.

Partnership with Maison Jean Monnet and the European Parliament Former Members Association

A project of the European Parliament, Maison Jean Monnet works to highlight the life and work of one of the architects of the European Union.

The European Parliament Former Members Association brings together almost 750 former Members of the European Parliament from all EU countries and across the whole political spectrum.

Unique Exchanges

  • Caucus discussions between European partners
  • EU democracy in action
  • Expert speakers with policy-making experience
